How to change Time Zone using Tzutil Utility

In this post I will be discussing on Windows Time Zone Utility which is called Tzutil. This utility (Tzutil.exe) is integral part of Windows 10, Windows 11 and all other Windows platform such as Windows Server 2019 / 2022. We can use this small utility to display the current time zone, and to change the time zone.

How to run Tzutil – Get current TimeZone

Open Command prompt as administrator and run the command:

Tzutil /g

Equivalent PowerShell command for tzutil to display TimeZone is:

Get-TimeZone

As we can see the following information:

Get list of available TimeZone

To change the time zone we need to find the list of available time zone. For this, run the following command:

Tzutil /l

Equivalent PowerShell command to display list of available Time Zone”:

Get-TimeZone -ListAvailable

Change the Time Zone

As we list of available Time Zone from above mentioned table, lets change the timezone. We need exact time zone ID to change it. Lets change it to Fiji Standard Time

Change the time zone using cmd prompt:

Tzutil /s “Fiji Standard Time”

Equivalent PowerShell Command:

Set-TimeZone -Name "Fiji Standard Time"

Changing the Time zone using command lines are equivalent to changing it through GUI when we go through Control Panel > Clock and Region, under Date and Time > Set the time and date and selecting Change time zone

How to turn off DST

If we wanted to disable the Daylight Saving Time, we need to go to Change time zone and uncheck the box Automatically adjust clock for Daylight Saving Time.

But if this needs to be automated for lots of devices using Configuration Manager or Intune, we can use following command line:

Tzutil /s "AUS Eastern Standard Time_dstoff"

Conclusion

In a nut shell we did following:
To get current Time Zone ID: tzutil /g
To get list of all available Time Zone ID’s: tzutil /l
To apply new Time Zone: tzutil /s TimeZoneID[_dstoff]

Few of us might be wondering what is the use case for changing the Time zone using command line. One of the most important use case I can share with you. If a government of Fiji or Samoa (which has happened in the past) announced delaying of Daylight saving time or totally getting eliminating the Day light saving time. This will not be implemented on Windows devices until unless Microsoft releases a patch. Hence, users will start complaining about change in time (1 hour less or more). Hence, we need to uncheck the box Automatically adjust clock for Daylight Saving Time. And to automate it for big organization, we can deploy it through SCCM by using tzutil /s TimeZoneID_dstoff.

Also, we can change the default time zone into a wim / by running the command:

Dism /Image:”c:\mount\windows” /Set-TimeZone:”AUS Eastern Standard Time”

You need to mount, make changes and then unmount the image.
